Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), also known as the slanting fungus, is a mushroom that grows on birch trees and is found in cool regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used chaga infusions to cleanse wounds. More recent studies suggest that the polysaccharides in chaga can stimulate the release of neurotransmitters.
The most common way to consume Chaga is by making Chaga tea. Chaga pieces are soaked in hot water to create an infusion. Chaga powder is also available, which can be mixed into smoothies or used as a spice in cooking. Chaga capsules are the easiest to take and are best taken with a meal and plenty of liquid. Chaga combines well with other mushrooms, such as Reishi, or, during the colder season, with ginger and rosehip.
