Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri), also known as the memory plant, is native primarily to tropical wetlands in Africa, Asia, and South America. The name Brahmi comes from Hinduism and is derived from "Brahman" – the enlightened state of consciousness. Over 3,000 years ago, Ayurvedic scholars used the plant to memorize long ancient texts. Modern science has identified flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin, and saponins such as bacoside A and bacoside B, in Brahmi.
Since many of the active ingredients in Brahmi are fat-soluble, absorption and effectiveness of the capsules can be improved by taking them with fatty foods. The optimal time to take them is in the morning, at noon, or early afternoon, preferably with a meal. A noticeable effect is usually only seen after at least 12 weeks of regular use. In Ayurveda, Brahmi is often used in combination with Ashwagandha and Triphala.
